Dog Days of Summer

I recently learned that the time between July 3 and August 11 are known as the dog days of summer and are a reference to Sirius, the Dog Star which is part of the constellation Canis Major. In the summer, Sirius rises and sets with the sun. Ancient Romans believed this bright star gave off heat, adding to the Sun's warmth. We now know that the heat of the summer is from the Earth's tilt and the extra greenhouse gases that trap the Sun's heat in our atmosphere. To locate the Dog Star in the night sky, find the three stars of Orion's Belt, look down and left. Sirius is best seen in the pre-dawn hours.

During these dog days of summer, here are tips on staying cool:

Drink water.

Take frequent breaks to cool down.

Wet a washcloth with cold water, put it in the freezer for 5 minutes and place over eyes, forehead, back of neck, or upper chest.

Find shade inside or outside.

Move slowly, gently, and with care.

Elevate legs to relieve pressure and decrease swelling.

Here are some movement inspirations to keep going and growing.
